Torn mainsail forces cautious limp towards Lorient harbour

Embrace the Challenge has suffered significant damage to its mainsail during a reefing manoeuvre in very strong winds, forcing the crew to nurse the boat towards Lorient at reduced speed.

The damage occurred at 21:45 UTC as the team attempted to shorten sail in the tough conditions. Current conditions make it impossible to attempt a repair at sea, so the crew are continuing on with a limited sail plan until an assessment can be made at first light.

All crew members are safe and well, but the team say they are "bitterly disappointed" by the setback.

The team hope to make a swift repair so they can get back to racing.
